Stand in Solidarity with Your LGBTTQ Sisters and Brothers

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia has been celebrated every year on May 17 since 2004. The date was chosen specifically to commemorate the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. Today, over 130 countries recognize May 17 as the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

The Day represents an annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, opinion leaders and local authorities to the continued discrimination and prejudice faced by Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transsexual-Transgender-Queer (LGBTTQ) people.

CUPW stands in solidarity with LGBTTQ struggles for human rights. We have a strong tradition of standing up, for and with, our LGBTTQ members in their fight for equality. We have negotiated clauses in our collective agreements prohibiting discrimination by reason of sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity.

As much as we have seen progress over the past few years, we know the struggle isn’t over and much has yet to be accomplished.

No matter who we love or how we identify, all of us deserve to feel safe, respected and to be free to be who we are. We will continue to stand with our LGBTTQ Sisters and Brothers in the fight for equality and respect.
