Arbitration Update

Friday August 30 2019

After a brief break, due to scheduling conflicts of all parties involved, the interest arbitration resumed on August 20, 2019 and continued for four consecutive days. Canada Post began with a lengthy opening statement and then began presenting its evidence.

CPC Witnesses

Canada Post’s first witness was Dr. Robert Campbell, who is recognized as an expert in postal labour history, economics and public postal analysis.
Dr. Campbell presented a report he wrote and testified as to its contents. His report focused on the declining lettermail volumes and the competitive nature of parcel delivery. He was cross-examined by CUPW’s counsel in great detail.

CPC’s next witness was Jean Caron, Interim Finance Lead. He presented a PowerPoint on the Canada Post business model and outlined the challenges that he believes Canada Post will face in the future. He will be cross examined when the arbitration resumes on September 26, 2019.

Canada Post’s first two witnesses presented the same doom and gloom forecasts that we have been seeing for decades. Your negotiating team will challenge the accuracy of these forecasts during cross examination and in our final arguments.

Upcoming Dates

The arbitration schedule will get very busy starting at the end of September, starting with September 26. We also have hearings on September 27, October 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 23 and 30. This will be a very hectic time as we have to prepare for the cross examination of several Canada Post witnesses. We do not know when Canada Post will complete the presentation of its evidence, but we will keep you informed on the progress.
