Good news for residents of Membertou, Nova Scotia! The second Canada Post Community Hub has just opened in this community. Community Hubs have been a key demand of our Delivering Community Power campaign since 2016 and CUPW is pleased to see the Corporation adding to the Community Hub already open in High Prairie, Alberta. Many more are needed!

Community hubs are a reconfiguration of a Canada Post location which includes additional services to meet the needs of local communities. This is especially important in communities where vital community services may be missing.

Indigenous and rural communities often have limited or no access to important services. The Membertou Community Hub is the first post office to serve the local Mi’Kmaq community of about 1,700 residents living in and outside area. It comes with an array of services including parcel lockers, EV charging, and the new financial services including an ATM, cheque cashing and the new MyMoney Loan product.

The Community Hub in Membertou also contains board rooms that can be booked by local groups to hold meetings as well as co-working. This helps small businesses and community groups grow. Canada Post and CUPW members can fill the gap!

Also notable is the application of provisions from our Collective Agreement that support staffing the location with Indigenous workers from the local community. CUPW negotiated language with Canada Post Corporation to improve Indigenous representation in the workforce, and our National Human Rights Committee works on employment equity. This is an equity gain for workers and will also increase the Post Office’s role as a source of local knowledge.

Of utmost importance is that the services for this location were selected after an extensive community consultation process, thereby ensuring that they meet the specific needs of this community.
