Have you been properly trained by a CUPW peer trainer to use the reaching device?

Are you being paid for the use of the reaching device?

Time values for delivery to rural mailboxes (RMBs) are more profitable for RSMCs when they use the reaching device.

During a recent audit of the employer-provided database, CUPW found that 1754 routes with RMBs were not using the reaching device for delivery to RMBs.

Yet some of these routes have actually been using the reaching device for a long time. If the system indicates that the tool has not been implemented, it means that these routes are not receiving the proper compensation.

Is this your case?

WHO SHOULD USE THE REACHING DEVICE?

  • Route holders who have received the training approved by CUPW and CPC.
  • Permanent and on-call relief employees who have received the same training.

Routes with more than 12 RMBs should use the reaching device. This is a health and safety measure introduced in a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed by the Union and the Corporation on June 5, 2013.

WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING DO I NEED TO RECEIVE BEFORE USING THE REACHING DEVICE?

Canada Post must have you trained by a peer trainer before you can start using this tool.

  • Training is MANDATORY BEFORE you start using the tool.
  • The reaching device must be used with ALL of its components, including the holder and the fulcrum.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM BEING PAID TO USE THE REACHING DEVICE?

Check your Schedule A. On page 2, you will find a chart like this one:

Vehicle Requirements - Exigences - véhicule

WHAT IF THE INFORMATION IS NOT ACCURATE?

Ask your supervisor to correct the situation. If the situation does not change, talk to your union and file a grievance.

WHAT IF I’M USING THE TOOL WITHOUT TRAINING?

If you are using the reaching device without training or without all the required components, stop using the device immediately until the situation has been corrected. Immediately notify the employer who will have to provide you with an ergonomic assistant in order to properly deliver mail to your RMBs until you have completed the required training and all components have been provided to you so you can perform your work safely.

If you have any questions regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to contact your shop steward.
